1969 AMC Hurst SC/Rambler 4-Speed

This 1969 AMC Hurst SC/Rambler is one of 1,512 examples produced for the single model year and was purchased by the current owner in 2002. Power is from a rebuilt 390ci V8 linked to a T-10 four-speed manual transmission and a 3.54:1 Twin-Grip rear axle. Finished in the model-specific “A” paint scheme of white, red, and blue, the car is equipped with a hood scoop, a black grille, blue 14″ wheels, a four-barrel carburetor, and a dual exhaust system. Interior amenities include a push-button AM radio, tri-color headrests, and a Hurst T-handle shifter. This SC/Rambler is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a copy of a build sheet, records, a shop manual, and a clean New Jersey title in the owner’s name.

Based on the Rambler Rogue two-door hardtop, the SC/Rambler was built in conjunction with Hurst and was marketed for competition in the NHRA F/Stock drag-racing class. This example was refinished in white with red side bands and a blue over-the-top arrow stripe under prior ownership. Features include a hood scoop, a black grille and tail panel, hood pins, and bullet-style painted mirrors in addition to Hurst and SC/Rambler badging, chrome bumpers, and polished exhaust finishers. The decals are peeling from the hood, and gallery photos show rust and bubbling on various body panels.

The SC/Rambler’s Handling Package consisted of a larger-diameter front sway bar plus heavy-duty springs and shocks. Blue-finished 14″ styled wheels wear American Motors center caps and are mounted with 215/75 Hankook tires with red-painted stripes. The seller tells us that the front drum brake conversion was completed under prior ownership.

The individual front seats and rear bench are trimmed in charcoal vinyl and are accompanied by a color-coordinated dash and door panels. Details include tri-color headrests, a Hurst T-handle shifter, a push-button AM radio, a Weather-Eye heat and ventilation system, and a locking glove box.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames a column-mounted Sun tachometer as well as a 120-mph speedometer and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 82k miles, approximately 19k of which were added under current ownership. The 2002-issued New Jersey title lists the mileage as 162,750, but the seller believes this was a misread of the odometer’s tenths digit.

The 390ci V8 was overhauled in 2002 and was factory rated at 315 horsepower. It is equipped with a forced-air intake system, a four-barrel carburetor, and chrome valve covers that show blemishes on the finish.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a T-10 four-speed manual transmission and a 3.54:1 Twin-Grip rear axle.
